Communication & Quality Relationships Part II

Quality relationship in the family can prevent marriage infidelity. The best place to learn group communication is in the family.

i2Communication Determines Relationship

Interpersonal and intrapersonal communication was discussed in our previous issue. These are two basic communication skills for every social being not only in order to survive but also to find meaning in life. The ability for intrapersonal communication can lead a person to respect self and others. It develops self-confidence which enables one to accomplish difficult tasks and encourage other people to do the same.

Interpersonal communication skill has more potential to work wonders since it involves at least two people entering into communion as a result of communication. Many issues are clarified, problems are solved and work is done because of a spontaneous and regular conversation. On the other hand, volcanic silence in intimate relationships, at home and in the work place starts in small matter such as miscommunication or simply inadequate communication.

Group Communication

Group conversation among people who have skills for intrapersonal and interpersonal communication is a lot easier to engage in. The best place to learn group communication is said to be within the family. It has been assumed that this skill is easily learned in the family since faith and trust are supposedly present in family relationships. It does not follow, however, that family members openly converse with one another.

What could have caused such phenomenon of increasing number of families not on speaking terms? Marriage infidelity is the most common and deeply rooted family wound. It has become an ordinary event in society. There may not be a direct quarrel and yet the number of broken families continues to rise.

The irony of information technology made available but not used properly to strengthen family ties is a sad reality in our society today. It is reported that about 12 million cellular phones are now being used in the Philippines with a billion text messages daily. What is it used for and where?

Group communication is a daily happening in the work place: business, education, church and government.

Harmonious working relationships develop depending on the quality of conversation taking place between and among groups of personnel. Communication within the organization, from the top management to the rank and file, is one big factor that affects work outputs. Is there respect towards individual persons in a group conversation? Do management and their staff respect each other’s roles and functions while maintaining their dignity as persons? Respect for persons is the foundation of a healthy group communication. We have to be reminded that we are equal in dignity before God and we only differ in our roles and functions.

Whatever level of communication we engage in, practice will enhance our skills and the art of intrapersonal, interpersonal and group conversation will be far greatly developed.

Communication ability determines the quality of relationships in every area of our life.
